Fire Department Responds
The Village of Ilion Fire Department responded to fire at 91-97 E Clark Street on December 6th to find a four-apartment home in flames. The fire was determined to have started the result of an explosion caused by a person smoking a cigarette near an oxygen tank. The department was also assisted by the Frankfort Fire Department. Families are being assisted by the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Fire Chief Trevett and the entire Fire Department encourage all throughout the year to use good fire safety practices. It is even more important during the holiday season to be sure of what is around you when lighting candles and making sure that holiday decorations are in good repair. BE FIRE SAFE. DRIVE CAREFUL

Codes
In this spot we will be featuring various portions of the Village of Ilion Codes.
Chapter 197 Streets and Sidewalks Snow in Roadways:The Village of Ilion reminds all residents that pushing, snow blowing or shoveling snow or ice out onto public roadways or sidewalks is a violation. Both the Vehicle and Traffic Law and the Village Code have sections prohibiting such actions. Citations may be written and you could be held responsible for any incident caused from these actions.
Snow and Ice on Sidewalks:While the Village of Ilion does have a sidewalk plow, it has first priorities for snow removal in other parts of the Village before removal of snow in front of residences. The Village Code provides for this removal being the responsibility of the homeowner or business owner. The Village will be out as often as it can.
For previous codes chapters listed here please go to the forms and permit page on this website.
Remembering September 11th 2001
The following remembrance was presented at the Ilion Fire House:
Most of us will always remember where we were on that day for the rest of our lives. We remember exactly where we were, who we were talking to, what we were doing at that exact moment that the news came across the television showing the first tower being hit.We were all astonished, dumbfounded, in a state of shock, thinking this can't be happening. That empty, sick, helpless feeling in your stomach.
Then the absolute horrific site of the second plane hitting the second tower and for those of us in the emergency services field knowing exactly what that was going to mean. The biggest question to us, I believe, was just how many?
A total collapse of the towers, I don't think, ever really occurred to many, if any, of us.When it happened, we in the emergency services family suffered the single greatest tragedy and loss of life incident in the history of the United States.
343 Firefighters perished from the NYC Fire Department
23 Police Officers perished from the NYC Police Department
37 Police Officers perished from the Port Authority
A total of 403 emergency personnel killed in the line of duty in New York City alone
Also we cannot forget that the Pentagon was also struck by a third plane and that 55 military personnel perished in Washington D.C.
We also need to remember today the approximately 2,500 civilians that passed away on that day. Some were in aircraft, some were in the Pentagon and others were in the Trade Centers, but all deserve to be remembered today.
I want to ask the public a small favor.Just because time has passed, do not forget what this event meant to this country.I know it hurts to remember.I know it bothers people to think about it.I know it makes people angry, but sometimes that hurt and anger is what keeps the drive and ambition to remember alive.
Less than a decade ago, firefighters, police officers and EMS workers across America were hailed as "heroes".' They along with the men and women of our armed forces are still "Heroes"' The job that these men and women perform day in and day out has not changed since that tragic day,but it seems to me that our outlook and thoughts of them may have.On this day September 11, 2009, I ask all of you to take a moment, in silence, and in your own way remember all of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice 8 years ago.
Thank you
John P Stephens
